Cyclists in New York have a very relaxed relationship to the traffic rules. They are going against the traffic one one-way roads and they jump the red lights more or less every time there is a chance. I soon discovered that I was the only that waited with the cars for the light to green! So I have begun to jump the lights as well. There are so many traffic lights in New York that cycling would be far to slow if one had to obey all of them. After all, there is clearly this idea that the traffic lights are in place to control and regulate cars that can cause fatal damage; something that bikes never do. So why obey a system that is not designed for one?
